Job Summary

Responsible for the supervision and protection of babies, toddlers and children while in the care of the court.  Ensures that children are safe, comfortable, kept in a tidy state and engaged in meaningful activities.

The FCD Child Officer may be assigned to any of the FCD locations.

Reports to FCD Court Services Coordinator
Supervision Given to FCD Child Assistants
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Interviews parent/guardian of the child/children to obtain critical data for example, name and address of parent/guardian/child/children, next of kin, telephone contact number if any, allergies and illness, feeding times, business before the court and the courtroom etc.
  • Verifies information obtained from parent/guardian on the Court Management Information System.
  • Maintains a register of information obtained.
  • Establishes and maintains a system for tidying the child care room.
  • Plans and executes activities for children in the care of the court.
  • Prepares, displays and maintain a print rich and literacy enhancing child care environment.
  • Organises and maintains a developmentally appropriate, stimulating and sanitary child care environment
  • Secure all utensils and materials used by children in a sanitary condition.
  • Maintains a childproof environment.
  • Ensures that where necessary children are fed when food is provided by parent/guardian.
  • Ensures that the interaction among children is safe and without incidents.
  • Makes visits to the washrooms with charge depending on the age of the child/children and where necessary ensures diaper change.
Knowledge
  • Knowledge of the various stages in childhood development.
  • Knowledge of first aid practices.
Skills and Abilities
  • Good interactive and interpersonal skills.
  • Skill in dealing with conflict among children.
  • Skill and experience in dealing with troubled children.
  • Skill in engaging children in conversation and play.
Minimum Experience and Training
  • Certificate in Early Childhood Training/Education.
  • Three (3) years’ experience working with and supervising children.
  • Valid First Aid Certificate.
